Bruce:
When we were shopping around for a boat, the criteria that we used was:
1, Twin diesel and generator
2, About 20 knot cruise
3, Roomy and well appointed for two, with space for a dinner party when warranted.
4, Capable of going to Cutty Hunk and Cape Cod every weekend and returning into 20 to 25 knots of South West wind and seas.
We looked primarily at Bertrams, Black fins and Hatteras
This 38 foot Phoenix fit our criteria better than any of the boats we looked at and I believe is a much better built boat than the rest.
We have cruised “Marguerite” from Green Port Long Island to Booth Bay Harbor Maine and every where in between
Bea:
WE call it our “floating cottage” and it’s been just that for the past 8 boating seasons, which for us begins in April and lasts until sometime around Columbus Day in October.
We fell in love with “Marguerite” from the day we took her from her slip in Branford, CT and cruised back to Snug Harbor, RI where she’s stayed for 7 years. This summer we are in Dutch Harbor, Jamestown. We love the change of scenery.
Every April, Bruce spends hours meticulously going through all the mechanical and electronic parts of the boat making sure she runs flawlessly when we cruise to Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, New York and Maine.
I’m a bit compulsive when it comes to my surroundings and so the interior is immaculate from stem to stern.
A weekend on “Marguerite” might go like this for us…….we wake to the sounds of others aboard their boats getting into their dinghies to go ashore, I anxiously get up first from the pleasant warmth of our comfortable, custom-made forward birth to make the coffee. After opening the blinds in the salon to the beautiful day, I step into the cockpit to view the spectacular harbor where we’d picked up a mooring the evening before when we arrived at our destination. Sensing a smile on my face as the sun warms it, I look forward to the day ahead with a feeling of tranquility that compares to no other experience I’ve had.
After breakfast and a hot shower, we get into the dingy and kayak to head to a beach for a day of swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. Other days we might just take a walk on the beach and relax with a good book or just hangout on the boat doing small chores and relaxing.
Editor's Notes:
The owner's have priced Marguerite for a quick sale. They simply wish to move up, notwithstanding the difficulty in parting with a friend.
Convertibles are interesting boats. They are a cross between a sport fisherman for a group, cruiser for five, and live aboard for two or three. Beginning as a capable sport fish, you have a solid foundation of excellent sea characteristics and power. Cruising and living aboard. are added extras. As a live aboard you have a perfect waterfront condo. Secure an East-West slip and point the boat to the West. You will have the most beautiful and cool back porch, taking advantage of the large evening shaded afterdeck.
I personally believe it will be some time for the housing / mortgage loan fiasco to sort itself out. Better real estate buys are yet to come. In the mean-time why not experience living aboard with all the appointments? It's an adventure and you are perfectly mobile. Living too far from work?
"Marguerite" is stunningly clean, lovingly kept, and as relentless as a freight train.
